Over the years I have worked my way through a diverse career path gathering insight from every element I could within the Building Services industry. Starting my career as a CAD draftsman at an M&E Consultancy is where I gained my AutoCAD and Revit abilities whilst providing me with great M&E insight along the way. This quickly developed into an Electrical Engineering Role where I found myself designing Electrical Systems for the built environment, such as; Lighting, Fire Alarm, Security, Cable sizing and Small Power and Data (the whole Electrical package). Whilst appreciating the relationship Electrical Services have in conjunction with Mechanical Services and learning how to navigate around complicated co-ordination issues and dealing with a whole other variety of sectors, such as; Architects, Structural Engineers, Specialist Consultants, Contractors while keeping Clients happy and projects within the specified scope.
Having worked across the board separately for Consultancy and Contracting businesses it has allowed me to gain appreciation for both. It has broadened my mind in terms of the narrative behind the design element. Working within a consultancy is all about 'detailed' design and fine tuning the specifics. This doesn't always mean that what is designed on paper (screen) is always practical on site. One of the most valuable things I learned from working alongside contractors is putting myself in the mind of a contractor on site and implementing that into my design as a consulting engineer behind the scenes and changing it along the way to make it work for everyone involved in the project.
I have been very fortunate to have worked on a variety of projects across a range of sectors including; healthcare, education, commercial, industrial, logistics, retail and residential. Experience is something that is earned and cannot be brought and having 14 years of such a wide range of experience has equipped me very well. Enhanced with good knowledge and common sense.
While my career lead me down one path, my passion for Property, Interior and Furniture design has entwined along side that and has become a journey of it's own which is where it has settled nicely and remains today. It's one thing to understand the technical design behind a project but also understanding how the practical side can be arranged in a way to help optimise that (and vice versa) is something I take into consideration and great pride in doing so. I have the ability to walk into any space and see improvements that could be made to maximise the comfort or productivity of whatever is required in the specific space. My mind works in a mathematical logical way which is what excels any design I undertake. I believe every space should be designed 'fit-for-purpose' to make sure there is a place for everything that is required in the particular space, while thinking ahead of elements that might be adding in future and making room for them at the initial stages.
A unique design trait I like to offer to clients who are particularly interested is 'Feng Shui' Design. I believe every space should be designed for it's specific purpose in a way that works best with nature and for the user. Feng Shui Design works to enhance any living or work space to bring harmony and balance with natures energy. For example, studies show that when we sleep with our heads towards the south (feet towards the north), it aligns with the earths electromagnetic field which ensures a better quality nights sleep. Better night sleep equals happier, healthier more refreshed person. And if we take that same principle into an office space, studies show that a desk facing East is by far the best directions to face, for peak work performance and all round mind-body integration. These are just a couple of examples of how I implement Feng Shui into my Design process, it depends what the user wishes to get out of their particular space.
I love the diversity of projects I have worked on over the years as each one has broaden my mind and enhanced my portfolio. I hope to work on many more and broaden my experience and knowledge even further.
